Musso Insurance is located on the Virden Square, next to Virden Dental.  The business has deep roots in Virden and Macoupin County dating back over 50 years. 

Musso Insurance agency began in 1955 as Wrightsman Insurance.  The business was first established by Okal Wrightsman.  “Over the years Okal and his son, Loy, headed the business.  When Okal retired in 1977, Dom “Nick” Musso and Loy became partners,” Marc Musso explained.

Marc joined the team after graduating from college with a degree in finance. “I came in May of 1992,” Marc added.  When asked what made him want to go into the insurance business, Marc said, “It’s all I’ve ever known, I have never thought about doing anything else.”

Marc and his wife Dawn purchased the insurance agency, updating the name to Musso Insurance Agency in 2001.  Over the years, the insurance business has expanded.  In 2005, they added an insurance office in Waverly by purchasing the Randy Mahan Insurance Agency.  That office is staffed by Brenda Chapman who has been with Musso Insurance Agency since 2002. 

Later in 2011, Steve Foster became a partner in Musso Insurance. Steve’s experience with Country Financial added even more experience to the Musso team.

In 2015, the agency purchased a longstanding Virden insurance agency, Smith Brown Insurance.  Smith Brown insurance was started by Vernon Smith in the 1940’s, this agency was later continued by Robert Brown from 1979, until his passing. 

In 2016, the agency expanded into Springfield.  The Springfield office has been staffed by Amy Hovey ever since the opening. 

Today, Musso Insurance Agency has added a 3rd generation of the Musso family.  Taten Musso joined the agency as a licensed agent in May of 2017.

Besides Taten, Marc’s wife Dawn also works at the office.  “She is the bookkeeper.”

Marc and Dawn have been married for 28 years.  “We have been married since 1994,” Marc said.

Marc and Dawn have two children.  Taten, who is part of the team, and Lakyn, who is a nurse, and married to Dwight Field.  “They live in Hamel.  Marc and Dawn have one grandchild Nyle.  He will be one year old at the end of the month.”

Steve Foster is an owner along with Marc.  Steve is married to Anne who is a nurse practitioner at Memorial Physicians Services at Koke Mill.  The couple has three girls, Gwen 15, Kendall 12, and Kathleen “Kat” who is 10. Steve said that his favorite part of working in the insurance field is, “The interaction with the people.”

Steve and his family reside in Chatham.

The building Musso Insurance is in was built in 1977 and was formerly Liberty Utilities.  “We bought it in 2017, and remodeled it,” Steve added.   The Virden office is staffed by Denisha Brethhorst who has been with the team since 2010, Lauren Williamson has been there since 2018, and this year, Kayla Smith joined the team. 

These days the office is a pretty relaxed place with a casual work environment.  The biggest advice that Marc gives his employees when working with a policy is, “Treat it like it is your own personal stuff, like it is your money.”

When you look at it that way, everyone will be dealing with the best possible interest for their clients!
